The Open University of Madrid (Universidad a distancia de Madrid, UDIMA) is the second private Open University and the third open university in Spain. It was founded in 2006, located in Madrid. This university seeks to follow the market leader (UOC) in the sector of private open universities. It sees the opportunity to grow in this market niche, as there aren’t yet many universities like this in Spain (relevant to the evolution of ICT related to education).

Nowadays a lot of people can not attend university for different reasons, so this target group is selected for the institution. Furthermore it offers international degrees such as business management, law, and engineering among others. It also offers titles such as Expert on Audit and Review of Annual Accounts, Training Course of Insurance and Reinsurance. It commenced activity in the year 2007/2008.

The main shareholder of UDIMA is CEF (Centro de estudios financieros); they work together on projects and courses, publishing books, and using the knowledge that CEF has acquired over numerous years of work in ICT and teaching.

The strength Of Open University of Madrid, Spain is associated with the way they teach; they use the newest ICT, but without forgetting the students. UDIMA takes care to remain very close to students (via personalization and constant accompaniment of the student), and for this reason it is hiring professional teachers with significant experience in different fields of knowledge - especially those used to working with distance learning systems based on new technologies.

The UDIMA mission is to provide the best possible service to students.

The main aims of UDIMA are teaching, learning, study and research of quality.

  • Teaching:

Teachers in charge of tutoring in different training activities use an on-line telematic tool for internal communication, since they can act as guides and mentors - and energize the different learning groups.

  • Training materials:

The teachers have all learning materials (theory and practice) in different media. Throughout the training, teachers invite students to make any comments and improvements necessary. These assessments are reflected in the two surveys that are conducted online through the training. Results are studied with the goal of improvement.

  • Research:

Research is undertaken with CEF. UDIMA has a strategic plan in ICT.

UDIMA aims to be a university focused on research. There are plans to create a Research and Development Institute which will be promoted from the various R & D in various fields of science and technology.

One can find UDIMA on the net; for example, Second Life is used to supplement online training activities.
