Head straight to the Virtual Schools Map

Fixed issue whereby calculation of "initiatives per million population" was not being done due to syntax changes. Lists of OECD, ASEAN and CARICOM countries now updated - see new association-wide maps utilising this, such as OECD/OER and ASEAN/OER. And now Commonwealth/OER. Closely followed by United Nations/OER, NATO/OER and World Bank/OER maps for different "GNI per capita" bands. Welcome to the Virtual Education Wiki, devoted to virtual learning in education at all levels (schools, colleges and universities) including informal learning, open learning (OER) and distance learning. It is also known as the Open Education Wiki.

As this is a wiki, you can edit it as part of the Virtual Education Wiki Community.  Prior to contributing, you may find it useful to view our help pages and note that anything you change may be amended or deleted by other wiki users.

The idea in 2008 behind the original wiki was to create an open and public space where researchers could share information about virtual developments in various different educational sectors. It was supported and maintained during 2009-2015 by a community of researchers from EU and beyond and was aimed at stakeholders, researchers and practitioners who wanted to have easy access to the latest information about how the virtual phenomenon is manifesting itself in schools, colleges and universities around the world. You will therefore find much of this legacy information in the wiki. The wiki is now being updated in all its aspects, focussing initially on OER initiatives, OER policies and virtual schools.

This summer (Northern Hemisphere) there is a big push on virtual schools, getting more coordinates and adding infoboxes to entries so that they can be dynamically mapped.

We are also looking for collaborators to load large amounts of other legacy material on OER. See in particular our samples of material from the former OER World Map. ← Look left in the Sidebar.

Jonathan Lloyd, author of the Online Schools Group on LinkedIn, has produced The Online Schools and Online Learning Guide independently tracks the impact and development of the digital education sector, UK and globally. It specifically focuses on the digitalisations of the education sector including online and hybrid schools, home-education, online schooling, virtual reality, skills, esports, AI, Web3 and learning communities.
