The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) supports e-learning.

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel's main office is in Brussels, Belgium.

At the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, a total of 9157 students registered for the 2006-2007 academic year, 3% more than the previous year. (1309 or around 13% of the total student body are ‘generation’ students, i.e. students who are registered for the first time in higher education.)

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel offers 28 bachelor programmes, 60 masters programmes and 35 postgraduate masters programmes, as well as a teaching diploma. In 2007, the Institute for Post-Academic Training (iPAVUB) offered 55 permanent and post-academic training programmes to professionals.

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel is an offshoot of the French-speaking Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) that was founded in 1834 by a Brussels lawyer with Flemish origins, Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen. It was not until 1963 that almost all the faculties in ULB offered courses in Dutch. The Dutch-speaking university was finally split off from its French-speaking counterpart on 1 October 1969. With the act of 28 May 1970, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université Libre de Bruxelles officially became two separate legal, administrative and scientific entities.

Basic Philosophy: the Vrije Universiteit Brussel is the only Flemish university that has incorporated the principle of 'free inquiry' in its statutes. This principle is based on a text by the French mathematician and natural philosopher Henri Poincaré (1854-1912), in which he says that:

Thinking must never submit itself,

neither to a dogma,

nor to a party,

nor to a passion,

nor to an interest,

nor to a preconceived idea,

nor to anything whatsoever,

except to the facts themselves,

because for it to submit to anything else would be the end of its existence.

The institution employs a total of 2697 people, of whom 1546 are full-time and 1151 part-time employees and of whom 1789 are academic staff.

In 2007, the research budget of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel was more than €73 million, €6 million more than in 2006.

The VUB is associated with other HEIs in the Brussels area through the Brussels University Association (Universitaire Associatie Brussel). Since 8 July 2003, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the (EhB) have been joined in this non-profit association. Its foundation was the formalisation of the collaboration agreement between the two institutions that was already concluded in 2001. In this agreement, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Erasmus University College undertook to engage in an intensive and structural collaboration in the fields of education and research.

VLE

The VLE used at the university is called "Point Carré". It is based on Dokeos and a Plone-Zope-based e-Portfolio, which will also be transferred to the central LMS Dokeos.
