Transcaucasia
Transcaucasia - also called Transcaucasus and South Caucasus - is a geopolitical region located on the border of Eastern Europe and Southwest Asia.
In theory, "Trans" implies that this region is the are beyond the Caucasus mountains - when one takes a Eurocentric view - but this is rather pedantic. The name is a convenient one for the grouping of the three former Soviet Union countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.
Putting them in a group does not mean that they are allies of each other - or their neighbours. The region contains three heavily disputed regions in theory parts of one or more of the countries – Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia, and Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan. Several wars have been waged in this region, including the 2008 South Ossetia war, Ossetian-Georgian conflict, and the Nagorno-Karabakh war between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
