The Western Balkans is a term increasingly used in EU circles for the countries of Southeastern Europe that are not (yet) in the European Union. Formally it comprises Albania and the countries of the Yugosphere.
Despite some negative historical associations of the word "Balkans", the term Western Balkans is convenient since it has a precise meaning coterminous with the countries in question, unlike other associated terms such as "Southeastern Europe" or "former Yugoslavia".
