The University of Pretoria (UP) launched a virtual campus in 1999. Today more than 30,000 students access Web-based modules. Over 2,000 staff members use Lecturers Online, of which only half use WebCT to support face-to-face teaching and learning.

UP is the largest residential university in South Africa, and also the country's leading research university (in terms of research output per annum since 1997). UP is one of the largest universities in the country. In 2008, student enrolment totalled 57,409 - of whom 18,475 were distance learners. It was founded in 1908.

The University teaches in English and Afrikaans. Sepedi is also used for communication.

The University of Pretoria has its own full-fledged client services centre for its students and lists its distance possibilities in this document: Distance Education 2008. Students can receive an Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE) with specialisation in Education Management or Special Needs Education and a Degree in BEd(Hons) Education Management, Law and Policy.

UP offers a web-based Masters programme in Veterinary Tropical Diseases (MSc). It is presented in collaboration with the Department of Animal Health, Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium, and the Department of Infectious Diseases and Immunology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University, the Netherlands.
