Overview

Thompson Rivers University (TRU), through its Open Learning Division (TRU-OL), is British Columbia's leading distance education provider. Educational goals are obtainable for anyone through the accessible and varied courses that can be taken anytime and at an individually-determined pace.

With over 400 individual courses and more than 53 programs available for completion by distance and online learning, students can take a variety of programs such as:

• University Preparation

• Certificates and diplomas, including advanced and post-baccalaureate

• Associate degrees

• Bachelor's degrees

Approximately 220 courses are designed and delivered by TRU-OL, while another 200 courses are available for registration through consortium institutions including Simon Fraser University (SFU) and the University of Victoria (UVic).

TRU is mandated by the government of BC to provide open learning, which acknowledges students work experience, past education and training through credit transfer, educational laddering and prior learning assessment and recognition. Students who complete a TRU certificate, diploma or degree program through Open Learning will receive a TRU credential that is fully recognized by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), of which TRU is a member. The Open Learning division of TRU, which helped found the Canadian Virtual University, operates in collaboration with BCCampus and other educational institutions as well as professional, industry and business associations. Flexible Course Structure

Most of Open Learning's distance courses are offered continually which means no registration deadlines to rush and meet. Students can organize their specific educational needs and goals within the framework of their lives. Some benefits of TRU-OL's student friendly delivery are:

• Flexible course delivery through web, online and/or print formats

• Continuous enrolment: register anywhere, anytime and complete studies at a pace and place that suits your lifestyle

• Minimal admission requirements

• Ability to transfer credits from and to other institutions

• Ability to gain credits for knowledge gained through previous work experience

Through Open Learning, a prospective students' lifestyle and livelihood may contribute to the learning process. Prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) can help award credit for learning achieved through work and life experience. Once a formal application for transfer credit and program admission is made, advisors will develop a program plan and discuss whether or not PLAR is a suitable choice for the student's academic goals.
