Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (a State University) are co-founders of the Distance Education School. Ministry of Education is coordinating organizational and legal aspects of School activities and provides its financial support and procurement. MIPT provides scientific and technical support of School educational activities, provides classrooms and covers maintenance expenditures.

Distance Education School objective consists in creating additional educational environment for high school students taking interest in Physics and Mathematics to boost their intellectual potential and enhance their motivation in continuing education and self-education and helping them to choose vocational training and profession-oriented studies.

Three main departments were created at DE School:

  1. Dept. of Distant Education (teaching on individual basis);
  2. Dept. of On-site Education (teaching is carried out at consulting centers located in Moscow and Moscow Region cities)
  3. Dept. of On-site and Off-site Education (Teaching is made in vocational groups of high school students living in remote locations of the Russian Federation under supervision of high school teachers of Physics and Mathematics).

High school students of forms from 8 to 11 study additional educational programs presented in uniformed mode. Training is offered on a non-paid basis. Education is organized in a way to provide high school students with a possibility to start learning at any of the above-mentioned forms and at any of the department they choose.

Admission is competitive and depends upon the results of admission exams in Physics and Mathematics, which are published on an annual basis in youth magazines such as “Quanta”, “Young Technician”, “Off-School Learner” and are published as leaflets and flyers that are post mailed to the addresses of public education supervision bodies of constituent entities of the Russian Federation and national educational institutions of different levels (e.g. high schools, colleges, grammar schools etc).

Distant Education School offers 47 assignments in Physics and Mathematics (4 assignments for each subject for students of form 8, and 6-7 assignments for students of forms 9 -11). Every assignment consists of several parts: theoretical part, analysis of typical problems, teaching aid and keys and 8 -12 control quizzes and tests for independent study. All tests and teaching aids are designed for the School distribution by teaching staff of the chairs of General Physics and Higher Mathematics of MIPT. High school students attending off-site and in-site classes of the School are supervised by students, post-graduate students and graduates of MIPT (up to 600 persons in all provided by the University on an annual basis), many of them in their day graduated from the DE School.

Approximate number of trainees studying at all departments of the School is 20,000 persons per year.

More than 1000 schoolteachers of Physics and Mathematics are involved in teaching in vocational groups created at high school institutions throughout all the territory of the Russian Federation.

Another important area of the School educational activities is refresher courses for schoolteachers specializing in monitoring studies progress of talented high school students. Special courses were organized in the framework of this project for the Republic of Kazakhstan.
