Gotland
Gotland is the largest island in the Baltic Sea. It is part of Sweden - in fact a county, province, municipality and diocese of Sweden.
At 3,140 square kilometers in area, it makes up less than one percent of Sweden's total land area.
The inhabitants number 57,317 (2006 figure), with about 22,600 living in Visby, the main town.
The Gotland region also includes the small islands of Fårö (where Ingmar Bergman used to live) and Gotska Sandön to the north, and the tiny Karlsö Islands to the west.
The main sources of income to the island are tourism, agriculture and concrete production from locally mined limestone.

Education in Gotland
Schools education in Gotland follows the standard Swedish pattern. In Gotland, the parish school is a key part of the system. There are upper-level compulsory schools in all the larger communities, and the upper secondary school in Visby offers tuition in a full range of general subjects and in several artistic fields as well.

Higher Education in Gotland
Gotland University (Högskolan på Gotland) was established in 1998, it is among the youngest universities in Sweden. The university offers quality programmes and courses both on campus and online - the majority of students study by distance teaching. it is based in Visby.
