Until 12 May 2010, DCSF, the Department for Children, Schools and Families of the UK government, led work across Government to ensure that all children and young people in England:

  • stay healthy and safe
  • secure an excellent education and the highest possible standards of achievement
  • enjoy their childhood
  • make a positive contribution to society and the economy
  • have lives full of opportunity, free from the effects of poverty

The DCSF web site was http://www.dcsf.gov.uk.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families was one of three new government departments set up by the then Prime Minister (of the UK) on 28 June 2007; the others are the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (DBERR), later merged into the Department of Business Innovation and Skills.

It has lasted less than three years.

One of the oddities of the UK is that there is a UK government and devolved Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland governments but no English government. (As yet.)

Change of name to DfE

(announcement of 12 May 2010)
