The Danish Virtual University (DVU or DVUNI) was conceived in 2000 as Denmark's response to the global e-learning boom in the late 1990s.

The project, however, was never completed and was quietly wound up. The Megatrends project describes the Danish Virtual University as follows:

The Danish Virtual University was initiated by the Danish Ministries of Education and Research in a mission statement on March 27, 2000. The € 5 million budget for the period 2000-2003 was intended to support the development of Web-based courses and provide information about the courses. The next government shut down the initiative, partly as a result of lacking support from the affected institutions. The only remaining result seems to be a portal provid-ing information about further and continuing education (www.unev.dk) that was initiated by the Danish University Rectors’ Conference and scheduled to open in August 2003.

The OBHE reports in a survey article on National Virtual Universities that:

Following a re-think, the new Danish portal for professional development called 'Continuing Education at Danish Universities - A Virtual Approach' was launched in November 2003. The portal was established by the 12 Danish universities and encompasses all the institutions' professional development courses. The initiative is part of wider attempts to establish a closer co-operation between industry and universities, and the idea has been well received by Danish companies. The portal includes traditional campus-based courses as well as online provision (with a mix of programmes in Danish and English). In July 2004 the portal had almost 1,600 courses and 130 programmes leading to a formal qualification.

However, this database about Danish universities' vocational training has not been updated since 1 January 2007.
