Institutes of Technology Ireland was incorporated in June 2005 as a not-for-profit organisation with charitable status.

It enables the Directors/Presidents of the 13 Institutes of Technology established under the 1992 RTCs Act to co-ordinate the work of the Institutes nationally and it resources the Management Teams of the Institutes in the discharge of their duties towards their respective Institutions.

Specifically IoTI:

  • Assists in the development of a common position on higher education policy issues amongst Institutes.
  • Promotes and facilitates discussion and consultation between representatives of the Institutes and other educational and research bodies in Ireland on matters affecting or relevant to the Institutes.
  • Advises Government, the Higher Education Authority, the institutions of the European Union and other relevant agencies or bodies regarding the views and policies of Institutes.
  • Provides information to Institutes and others on important Irish, European and other international educational developments.
  • Participates in and contributes to international organisations and committees appropriate to the work of Institutes.
  • Administers research funding programmes on behalf of the Department of Education and Science.
  • Promotes international relationships with similar organisations in other countries.
  • Nominates persons to statutory and other bodies at the request of the Minister for Education and Science and other appointing persons or bodies.
