ESMU
ESMU is not so much a system for benchmarking e-learning but an exercise which the European Centre for Strategic Management of Universities carries out from time to time. It is not clear whether there is any consistency of criteria between iterations of the benchmarking - in the last round E-xcellence was used as the base system. Whether it is now policy for ESMU to use E-xcellence is not clear.
Latest round of ESMU benchmarking e-learning
A benchmarking exercise on e-learning was launched in the spring of 2009. The exercise was initiated by the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and gathered a group of nine European universities. The project started in April 2009 and was planned to end in December 2009.
The benchmarking exercise was co-organised by ESMU and European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (EADTU). It combined ESMU's collaborative benchmarking approach (benchmarking through a comparative exercise of good practices between universities) and EADTU's more individually-oriented approach.
EADTU's E-xcellence online tool, consisting of a set of 33 e-learning benchmarks, was used as a starting point to the benchmarking exercise, but we understand that it was modified.
The aim of the benchmarking project was to identify good practices on e-learning by learning from other participants.
Participating universities were planned to be:
- University of Southern Denmark
- University of Copenhagen
- Aarhus University
- University of Latvia
- Lund University
- University of Kuopio
- University of Porto
- University of Bologna
- University of Oulu
The University of Southern Denmark hosted the online questionnaire for the benchmarking exercise (accessible only to project participants).
