West Bengal is a state in the eastern region of India. It borders Sikkim to the north, Bhutan to the north-east, Assam and Bangladesh to the east, the Bay of Bengal to the south, Orissa to the south-east, Jharkhand to the west and Bihar to the north-west.
The 2011 census records a population of 9.1 million over 19 districts. The state capital and largest city is Kolkata.
Education in West Bengal
Kolkata has played an important role in modelling the education system of India, with many of the first schools established by missionaries and reformists, employing Western models of education.
