West Bengal is a state in the eastern region of India. It borders Sikkim to the north, Bhutan to the north-east, Assam and Bangladesh to the east, the Bay of Bengal to the south, Orissa to the south-east, Jharkhand to the west and Bihar to the north-west.

The 2011 census records a population of 9.1 million over 19 districts. The state capital and largest city is Kolkata.
