The Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Complutense University of Madrid, UCM) supports e-learning through its Virtual Campus.
The university was founded in 1499 and claims its history can be traced back as far as 1293, when the Cisneros’ Complutense University was established. In 1893 it was renamed to Central University, but in 1970 the government undertook plans for the reform of higher education and the Central University was renamed the Complutense University thus taking back the name of its place of origin.

It is designed as a set of computer-based resources available to teachers and students to facilitate their work and to be used as a support tool in the transition to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).
The Virtual Campus centres on a course management and teaching content tool. Its main aim is to offer support for face-to-face teaching and learning.
The Virtual Campus combines the following CMSes and software: WebCT, Moodle and Sakai. More information on the Virtual Campus can be found at http://www.ucm.es/campusvirtual
Furthermore, UCM publishes videos via its Complumedia web site and has links to Metanet, its administration intranet students and teachers and its Summer School.
The university also gives attention to lifelong learning with its Courses for Lifelong Learning and its "More Mature Students Programme" which has the aim to bring the university within the reach of Madrid's senior citizens.
