''Jan Elen'' is professor at the Department of Educational Sciences of the K.U.Leuven. He earned his PhD in 1993 at the same university with a dissertation that analysed the relationship between descriptive and prescriptive instructional design statements. For a period of 10 years he has been responsible for the educational support office of the K.U.Leuven. Part of his responsibilities were the elaboration of an educational concept for the university and the organisation-wide implementation of a learning management system. As a member of the Center for Instructional Psychology and Technology, his research is oriented towards the design and use in educational settings of computer-supported learning environments. This research is done mostly in higher education settings. Support for his resaerch was granted by the Flemish resarch council and the European Commission. He has
