University of Maryland University College

The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) is one of the largest public providers of online higher education in the US, targeting working adults and those in the military with a wide variety of low-cost, flexible online programmes. Its offices in Asia and Europe offer courses primarily to individuals in United States military communities, i.e. Americans stationed overseas.

Headquartered in Adelphi, Maryland, US, UMUC has classroom locations in Washington, D.C., Europe, Asia and the Middle East. UMUC considers itself to be "globally focused", serving more than 90,000 students worldwide. More than 32,000 stateside students attended UMUC in fall 2007, an increase of 74% since 1997; in 2007, UMUC’s overseas divisions offered on-site classes at 150 sites in 22 countries, enrolling 38,288 students (most in the US military). UMUC offers certificate, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in a variety of fields.

Online courses are delivered via WebTycho, a Web-based learning platform developed by UMUC.

In 2008, UMUC enrolled close to 60,000 active duty military, reserves, dependants and veterans, offering courses at military installations and other operating locations on seven continents.

UMUC offered its first distance education courses in 1972, and its first electronic courses in 1994. Today, more than 30% of students take classes purely online.

UMUC has received numerous awards for its web-based technologies and courses, including several from the Sloan Consortium.
