The Umeå University (Umeå universitet, UMU) supports distance and e-learning. Umeå University was founded in 1965 and is Sweden's fifth oldest university. The web site states: "We constantly strive towards making it one of Scandinavia's best environments for study and research that meets the challenges of an ever-increasing global society.

The institution’s main office is in Umeå, Sweden. Other campuses are located in Umeå (Umeå Arts Campus), Västernorrland County (Campus Örnsköldsvik) and Skellefteå (Campus Skellefteå).

Today the total of students - including those at the postgraduate level - is approximately 29,000.

Additionally, there are 1,780 teachers and researchers employed by the university.

UMU also provides courses about e-learning such as New Technologies of e-Learning 2.0

Distance learning

More than 9,000 of Umeå University students are taking courses via distance education, or off-campus.

UMU has web-based courses that are carried out completely online, for which students obtain university level credits anywhere in the world that suits their own schedule. What Umeå calls "distance courses" however, require the student to participate in a few on-campus meetings.

The Umeå University LMS is called Cambro and is created with Sakai (Open Source).
