University of Central Florida

The University of Central Florida (Online@UCF, UCF) delivers online distance education courses via its Online@UCF service. As of Autumn 2007, UCF was the sixth largest university in the US.

UCF's main campus is in Orlando, Florida, US. There are 11 other regional campus locations throughout Central Florida, comprising 12 colleges total. Online@UCF is managed by UCF’s Center for Distributed learning (in Orlando).

The University of Central Florida launched its first Web-based course initiatives in 1996 to improve course access for students who were geographically dispersed across the state. Online@UCF now offers seven full undergraduate degrees, eight postgraduate degrees, and 12 graduate certificates (as well as 180 online courses, across all academic areas). Some programmes do require face-to-face internships, practica or clinical experiences that must be completed in person.

Established in 1963, UCF is a public university with roughly 48,000 students enrolled. Of these, 41,000 are undergraduates and 7,000 are postgraduates (with 1,600 doctoral students). There are 1,700 faculty members.

Online courses may be taken in three different modes:

• World Wide Web courses are conducted via Web-based instruction and collaboration only (though proctored examinations may be required).
• Video Streaming courses are delivered via streaming video and may be supplemented by additional Web activity, projects or exams.
• ReduceSeatTime/Mixed Mode courses include both classroom attendance and online instruction. They may include video streaming and labs.
