Wim Van Petegem holds an MSc. degree in Electrical Engineering (Rijksuniversiteit Gent, BE, 1987) and an MSc. degree in Biomedical Engineering (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, BE, 1989). In 1993 he received his PhD. degree with a thesis on Iterative Solutions to Electronic Problems, based on Finite Element Methods: Electro-Thermal Simulation and Electrical Impedance Tomography'. He conducted his post-doctoral research on optical immunosensors, at the Dept. of Electrical Engineering and the Dept. of Immunology University of Alberta, Canada.

From 1994 till 1996 he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, in the Division of Biomechanics and Engineering Design in the field of Rehabilitation Engineering. In 1996 he was appointed Senior Researcher with LINOV, the Leuvens Institute for Innovative Learning at the K.U. Leuven, involved in research on the introduction of ICT in education. From September 1998 he was Assistant Professor at the Science and Technology Department at the Open University of the Netherlands , involved in research on Web-based learning and in education on ICT and management. In 2000 he returned to Leuven to become parttime Senior Researcher at LINOV (K.U.Leuven) and parttime lecturer at the Katholieke Hogeschool Leuven, Department of Economics.

Since July 2002, he is appointed head of the unit [AVNET - K.U.Leuven| Audiovisual & New Educational Technologies (AVNET) at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven]]. This unit incorporates the University's Audio-Visual services, eLINK and the Studycentre Open University. Since January 2005 he is appointed vice-chairman and treasurer of EuroPACE.

He has worked at the University of Alberta, Edmonton (Canada), at the Open University of the Netherlands and at the Leuven University College (Belgium). He is Vice-Chairman of EuroPACE, Board member of EFQUEL, Bureau member of SEFI, Fellow of EDEN, and Chairman of the Task Force e-Learning in the Coimbra Group. His current research interests are in the field of multimedia production, new educational technology, networked e-learning, virtual mobility, lifelong learning, open and distance learning, knowledge transfer and science communication. Recent projects in which he is or was involved as contractor, as partner or as expert include REVE, eLERU, Being Mobile, VICTORIOUS, MASSIVE, Sputnic, VENUS, UNIQUE, Re.ViCa, etc. mostly financed by the European Commission (DG Education and Culture). He is also active in TEMPUS projects and other development cooperation projects with the South.
