The Hong Kong Virtual University (HKVU) supports online education for students of Hong Kong tertiary institutions and universities.

The HKVU Programme is a collaborative project funded by Hong Kong University Grants Committee's Restructuring and Collaboration Fund. The objectives of this programme are to provide a networked virtual campus for connecting local tertiary institutions and to provide students with a wider range of subject choices and greater flexibility in learning provision.

Students of Hong Kong tertiary institutions and universities may take the online courses offered by HKVU. HKVU courses are jointly provided by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong, Lingnan University, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, and The University of Hong Kong.

The web site notes somewhat opaquely that over 100 schools have participated in the project, e.g. as Canadian Int'l School, Diocesan Girl's School, King's College, La Salle College, Marymount School, Pui Ching Middle School, St. Paul's Convent School, and Wah Yan College. This cases some doubt as to the meaning of the word "university" in the name HKVU.

According to the Wikipedia entry (Aug 20 2009) HKVU was formerly known as the "Cyber University", founded in 2001. (HKVU is not mentioned on the UGC web site, though its status is confirmed elsewhere on the web - with most coverage dating to 2005-2007.)

These various courses are jointly provided by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong, Lingnan University, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, and The University of Hong Kong.

Online courses cover four areas: general education, information technology, language, and science and education. However, as of summer 2009, the web site did not list any future courses available.

The Hong Kong Virtual University is hosted by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (UST), in Kowloon, Hong Kong.
