The ASEAN Virtual University was established by the ASEAN University Network (AUN) in 1997-1998, designed to help ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asia Nations) member countries realise a regional awareness and identity. A single curriculum was developed to provide students with information about ASEAN societies, economies and politics in the ASEAN countries, designed to develop into a joint degree-granting programme for ASEAN Studies. Development of the ASEAN Virtual University was led by De La Salle University in the Philippines.

ASEAN University Network (AUN) was founded in November 1995 by ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asia Nations) member countries. Membership has ranged from 13 to 23 nations. As noted on the ASEAN web site:

The main objective of the AUN is to strengthen the existing network of co-operation among leading universities in ASEAN, by promoting co-operation and solidarity among ASEAN scholars and academicians, developing academic and professional human resource, and promoting information dissemination among ASEAN academic community.

The Office of the AUN Secretariat is in Bangkok, Thailand.
