Inter American University of Puerto Rico (Inter) is a private higher education institution founded in 1912, which consists of nine campuses and two professional schools (Law and Optometry), 14 cyber centers throughout Puerto Rico - and in Orlando, Florida and a strong distance learning online program. In 1944 it became the first four-year liberal arts college in Puerto Rico and outside the continental United States to receive the accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The University has maintained this accreditation uninterruptedly for more than sixty years. Inter American University of Puerto Rico, with an average enrollment of 44,000 students and 2,600 full-time and part-time professors, has an academic offering in areas, such as sciences, engineering, technology, health, education, social sciences, and humanities, among others. It offers 132 associate and bachelors degrees, 65 masters degrees, 12 doctorates, a Juris Doctor and a Doctor in Optometry. These programs are all licensed by the Puerto Rico Council on Higher Education. The University offers 18 academic programs completely online that are taught by 360 professors highly-qualified in e-learning design and methodology, more than 400 online courses and an average student enrollment in online course of 17,000 students. Consequently, the Inter American University of Puerto Rico is the largest and most important private higher education institution in Puerto Rico and one of the most developed and technologically advanced of the Caribbean.
In accordance with its Mission, Inter is seen as a place for socio-technological debate and analysis and for the ethical discussion of the transformations generated by the age of informatics and knowledge society. With this conception, Inter joined, through UNIVERSIA, the OCW Consortium in 2007, of which the University is a founder member.
