The e-Learning Guidelines (eLG) were designed to help institutions improve their e-learning practice. They have been designed in New Zealand for teachers, support staff and managers, and provide up-to-date, practical information and direction on e-learning.

The design of the guidelines encourages further development and discussion from the tertiary community. users can become involved, discuss the issues, and add their expertise.

Users can change and add to the guidelines and exemplars simply by selecting the edit button on the menu.

They can explore the Implementing e-learning guidelines project and the specifics of each of the twenty one projects that are currently underway across New Zealand.

They can also read a case study on implementing the e-learning guidelines at the New Zealand Tertiary College.

The Tertiary Education Commission and the New Zealand Ministry of Education funded this project. The final report outlines the projects aims and outcomes.

How to use the guidelines

Teaching staff can use the guidelines to search for information and ideas or use them to help in course design or redevelopment.

Managers can use the guidelines to help develop procedures to help support staff in their use of e-learning.

Support staff can also use the guidelines in a variety of ways.

Staff developers can use them as a tool to inform debate about the quality of e-learning and support for staff using e-learning.

Administrators can refer to the guidelines when thinking about developments to enrolment procedures and ways in which they communicate with students. Library staff can find guidance on how to support students using on-line


Current status

Not clear. There appears to have been little updating since 2008.
