In January 2000 the Cyber High School marked the beginning of Official Cyber Education at school level in Korea.

The system was developed by LG-EDS Systems jointly with the Korean Education Development Institute and provided High school education content available to anyone on the internet

Users could then receive formal high school education through the internet. When users logged on to a class in the cyber public high school, they could receive classes on real high school subjects without restrictions on time and location.

Press release

The press release at http://www.lgcns.com/pr-center/news/view/48/opening-of-cyber-high-school-cyberhs-re-kr-marks-official-cyber-education went on to say:

High school students themselves can log on the cyber high school to learn more about what they learn or fill in on what they are not sure about. They can even receive classes on subjects not available at their own schools. The site also enables the offspring of workers stationed abroad and Korean residents outside of Korea to log on and get in touch with the education curriculum of Korea.

The cyber high school also gives an opportunity to those who were denied high school education, for example, those who were not able to advance to high school in the past, disable personnel who cannot regularly participate with normal students, and people who have problems adapting to school environment, to catch up on the high school education they missed. Unlike broadcast education which has limits on time and the fact that it is driven one way, cyber education enables two-way communication between the students and the teachers which makes it no different from classrooms offline.

With multimedia available on computers, the educational effects are expected to be much higher than text-focused education. A cyber counseling room will be operated as well to provide advice on student's career path and study methods. An English version of the website will also be available providing guidance to those foreign citizens seeking or at least have an interest about learning in Korea.

The "public cyber high school" symbolizes a new effective measure in solving the Korea's constant high private education cost problem as well as providing high quality education regardless of the area people live in. Besides the students themselves, the site is expected to serve in heightening the level of computers awareness of classroom teachers.
