The Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) is a not-for-profit organisation and part of Durham University, based in North East England. The fundamental aim is "to improve teaching and learning across society today and tomorrow".

The Centre has a wide-ranging and influential role in education. Services fall into the following areas:

  • Assessment & Monitoring Systems for Schools, Colleges and Education Authorities
  • Educational Research & Evaluation
  • Teaching, Training and CPD

The Centre endeavours to provide high quality information through a scientific and evidence-based approach. It is committed to:

  • applying the best standards of science to the development and evaluation of policies
  • evidence, rather than authority or opinion, as the guide to practice
  • collecting gold-standard evidence by using controlled trials wherever possible
  • quantification to give accurate answers and keep things ‘in perspective’
