The Kentucky Virtual Campus for K-12 Students (KYVC4K12) initiative offers primary and secondary school students an online curriculum targeted specifically for students from kindergarten through grade 12. It is affiliated with the Kentucky Virtual University.

The main goals are to:

  • Assess each student's skills and prescribe personalized learning paths to fill identified skill gaps
  • Hold students' interest through interactive and engaing instruction and teach them the core skills for which they are held accountable

The curriculum is avilable to students through three programmes:

  1. Supplemental Educational Services
  2. Academic Enrichment Services
  3. Home School/Independent Reinforcement

For more details on these and on the wide range of courseware available see http://www.kyvc4k12.org/program.asp

Programmes

Supplemental Educational Services

School districts must offer free Supplemental Educational Services (SES) to students when a school in the district does not meet "Annual Yearly Progress" for three consecutive years. School district personnel offer a list of approved SES Providers to parents at the particular school. As an approved SES Provider, KYVC offers a web-based, self-paced curriculum (PLATO) aligned with Kentucky educational standards, which is delievered by a certified teacher who works with the child individually. Fastrack assessment in mathematics and/or reading will be assigned to assess student's skills and develop an individualized programme based on pretest results.

Academic Enrichment Services

Academic Enrichment Services (AES) are available when a school partners with the KYVC to offer online tutoring, remediation, or credit recovery. These services are available for grades Kindergarten through 12 in a full range of subject areas, including reading, mathematics, science, and social studies.

The KYVC also provides a fully-trained and Kentucky-certified teacher who will work with each child as needed, or allows for the local school to be trained in how best to utilize the online teaching and learning environment.

Home School/Independent Reinforcement

For homeschooled students - and also students (or their parents) desiring personalized challenging lessons/courses outside the classroom - PLATO Learning provides the opportunity to create your own curriculum and be engaged in the learning process. PLATO Learning creates comprehensive, technology-driven instruction designed to provide a flexible, one-on-one learning opportunity for a diverse set of learners. PLATO Learning can teach and reinforce skills in reading, math, science and social studies. However, note that PLATO and KYVC do not award credit.

VLE

KYVC4K12 uses the PLATO Web-based Learning Network. For more on PLATO Learning see http://www.studyweb.com
