The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (The Framework) promotes lifelong learning in Scotland, a home nation of the UK.

It supports everyone in Scotland, including learning providers and employers, by:

  • helping people of all ages and circumstances to get access to appropriate education and training so they can meet their full potential;
  • helping employers, learners and the general public to understand the full range of Scottish qualifications, how qualifications relate to each other and to other forms of learning, and how different types of qualification can contribute to improving the skills of the workforce.

Its web site is at http://www.scqf.org.uk

The Framework is run by the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework Partnership (SCQF), a Company Limited by Guarantee. Registered in Scotland and a Registered Scottish Charity.

The Framework

(sourced from http://www.scqf.org.uk/)

  • Describes the courses and programmes that lead to qualifications;
  • Helps you develop `progression routes' for individual to follow;
  • Allows individuals to make the most of the opportunities to transfer credit points between qualifications.

There are many different kinds of Scottish qualifications - Highers, SVQs, HNDs, Degrees and many more. Each qualification has an SCQF Level and Credit Points so it is easier for enquirers to compare one with another.

Looking at the different levels in the Framework is like looking at a road map. An enquirer can see where he/she is now and the different routes one can follow - like the different routes to learning - to reach their next destination.

The SCQF is intended to help describe programmes of learning that lead to the various qualifications; support the development of routes to progress from qualification to qualification; and maximise the opportunities to transfer credit points between qualifications. It will do this by making the overall system of qualifications and relevant programmes of learning easier to understand and providing a national vocabulary for describing learning opportunities.

The SCQF assists in making clear the relationships between Scottish qualifications and those in the rest of the UK, Europe and beyond, thereby clarifying opportunities for international progression routes and credit transfer.
