Lakehead University (LU) supports online and distance education through its Continuing Education and Distributed Learning (CEDL) offices.

Lakehead University's main office is in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada; it is the only university in Northwestern Ontario. Lakehead offers a broad range of degree and diploma programs within nine faculties. Nearly all Lakehead students are from Ontario, Canada, though out-of-province and international students account for 5.7% and 2.3% of enrollments respectively.

Lakehead University evolved from Lakehead Technical Institute (founded 1946) and Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology (founded 1957). The university has roughly 7,300 undergraduates; 750 postgraduates; and 290 full-time faculty members.

More details

A handful of degree and certificate programs are offered entirely through distance education and blended/hybrid options (on campus or off.) Certificates for teachers and other professional development education courses are available online; other kinds of online programs are available to off-campus students through a "Community-Based Programming" effort.

Tools such as audio/videoconferencing, streaming media, CD-ROMs, e-mail, message boards, synchronous chat, and presentations may be used for courses. Printed materials may be used as well.

Audio/videoconferences may be held at designated sites located across Ontario. Other arrangements for conferencing may be made for students not living within close proximity to a site.
