Jonathan Darby is Director, Working in Partnerships Project, UK Open University.

Until 2006 he was a visiting fellow at the national eLearning Research Centre at the University of Southampton, conducting research into e-learning for distance learning.

In 2002-2004 he was chief architect at UKeU with responsibility for the design, development and support of learning systems, and in particular the UKeU's learning environment.

Prior to joining UKeU he was founder director of Technology-Assisted Lifelong Learning (TALL) in the Department for Continuing Education of the University of Oxford, and a fellow of Kellogg College. (This period spanned the time of writing his reports for The e-University Compendium.) The TALL unit is recognised in the UK and internationally as a leader in e-learning innovation and online course development.

From 1988 to 1996 Jonathan directed the UK Computers in Teaching Initiative, which provided information, advice, support and training to academic staff in all of the UK's universities and colleges of higher education.

He is co-author of Managing Change in Higher Education: A Learning Environment Architecture, was the founding editor of Active Learning (one of the UK’s leading education journals) and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks He was also founder president of the Association for Learning Technology.
