The Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research (in full: Royal Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research: Norwegian: Kunnskapsdepartementet, literally Ministry of Knowledge) is responsible for education, research and kindergartens in Norway. Its Departments include:

  • Department of Early Childhood Education and Care
  • Department of Education and Training
  • Department of Higher Education
  • Department of Policy Analysis, Lifelong Learning and International Affairs.


Reporting to it are a number of agencies and companies of which the most relevant for Re.ViCa purposes are:

  • Norway Opening Universities, or Norgesuniversitetet: Stimulates cooperation between business and higher education, and to increase life-long learning
  • Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education, or Nasjonalt organ for kvalitet i utdanningen (NOKUT): Supervises and helps improved the quality of higher education
  • Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Higher Education, or Senter for internasjonalisering av høyere utdanning: Promotes international cooperation in higher education and research
  • Norwegian Institute for Adult Learning, or VOX-læring for arbeidslivet: Promotes adult learning within reading, writing, arithmetic and ICT
  • Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund, or Statens lånekasse for utdanning: Grants loans and scholarships to students
  • Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service, or Samordna opptak: Coordinates admission to undergraduate courses at state universities and colleges
  • UNINETT: Operate the university/college/research National Research and Education Network (NREN).
