Steven Verjans was born on July 1st, 1968 in Tongeren (Belgium). He received the MA degree in Germanic Linguistics and Literature from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1991 with a thesis on “Spectral Analysis of Dutch vowels using the CEPSTRUM technique”. He also holds a Master’s degree on Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science from the K.U.Leuven (1994) with a thesis titled “Computer semiotics as a basis for integrating different views on human-computer interaction”. In 2003, he obtained a PhD from the University of Southern Denmark on the basis of a dissertation with the title “Harmony and Stress in Information Systems Development and Implementation – A multi-level theory and some empirical work on the crossroads of work psychology, organisational theory and information systems research”. He was also awarded the title of Industrial PhD researcher, by the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences in 2003. Since 1993, Steven has worked as a researcher and project coordinator for a number of private companies (Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products, Odense Steel Shipyard, Dansk Management Forum) as well as research institutions (K.U.Leuven, Limburgs Universitair Centrum, University of Southern Denmark, Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School, Katholieke Hogeschool Limburg). Since 1993, he has worked on a number of European R&D projects: AMODEUS-II (Esprit), TOPILOT (Telematics for Education), and UPSIDE (Esprit), in which he was both researcher and (local) project manager. His research interests include Information Systems, Organisational Change and Work Psychology, e-Learning, Organisational Semiotics, Human-Computer Interaction, and Interactive Multimedia in Education and training. From 2004 till 2007 he was senior researcher at K.U.Leuven, and guest lecturer on the MITKO programme at the University of Southern Denmark. He currently works at the Open University in The Netherlands, where he is an assistant professor / junior lecturer at OTEC working on development and implementation projects related to educational technology.
