EDEN, the European Distance and E Learning Network - exists to share knowledge and improve understanding for professionals in distance and e-learning across the whole of Europe and beyond, and to promote policy and practice for this field of endeavour. EDEN is for all those concerned with distance and e-learning, in all sectors and phases of education and training.

With more than 1000 individual members and 197 institutional members, EDEN holds annual conferences attracting more than 550 participants; holds additional conferences on research and on the schools sector every two years; supports its own open source journal EURODL (www.eurodl.org); and provides support and advice for a range of projects in the European sphere - EDEN is the smart network for the professional community, and a professional community for smart learning.

EDEN was established in 1991.

It is an international educational association open to institutions and individuals dealing with e-learning, open and distance education. Providing versatile expertise, the Association embraces all levels of formal and non-formal education and training. EDEN is a not-for-profit organisation, registered as a limited Company under English law.

EDEN is fostering developments and collaboration in the constantly evolving field of e-learning and distance education by shaping European policy and offering services in a non-hierarchical manner. As a meeting place, EDEN assists a wide range of institutions, networks and individuals in becoming involved in professional information and networking activities, the organisation of highly acknowledged European conferences, by its publications and information services, and also by taking active role in a wide range of important EU projects. It has also proved successful with thematic activities like the Open Classroom Working Group (school level distance education) and the field of research.

In a proactive way, EDEN has been instrumental in developing European policy in distance and e-learning, in the promotion of networking and co-operation, in the support of East-West collaboration and professional development in the open, distance, flexible and e-learning sector.

As a key asset, EDEN has a strong background in its active membership, that is open to anyone with an interest in open, distance, flexible and e-learning, particularly at traditional universities, national professional associations and institutions. By joining EDEN you become part of the largest, active and dynamically developing professional community of experts and practitioners of electronic distance education who are representing 50 countries from Europe and from other continents.

Since 1997 the Secretariat of the Association has been hosted by the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.
