The Kentucky Virtual Schools (KYVS) is a state virtual school located in the US state of. It was formerly known as "Kentucky Virtual High School". It offers a range of online, e-learning services to schools and students.
The virtual school programme was created by the state's governor in January 2000 and serves grades 9-12, although courses are made available to qualified middle school students. KYVS enrolled 1,615 students in 2009-10, a decrease of about 30% from the previous year.
Courses include Advanced Placement classes, foreign languages and core courses to accelerate learning and to make up credits. Learning is supplemental, self-paced, fully online and available to students statewide.
Run by the state's department of education, it is not a free service - but school districts typically absorb costs for students enrolled elsewhere in a traditional full-time public school. There are also private and homeschooled students. Fees are $165.00 per half-credit course, $330.00 per whole-credit course and $165 for a 9‐week credit recovery course. Diplomas are awarded by traditional Kentucky schools.
