Berlin is one of the 16 states of Germany and also the capital city of Germany.
It has a population of 3.4 million. It is subdivided into twelve boroughs.

Education
Berlin has four universities and numerous private, professional and technical colleges (Fachhochschulen), offering students a wide range of disciplines. Around 130,000 students attend the universities and professional or technical colleges.
The three largest universities account for around 100,000 students. These are:
- Humboldt Universität zu Berlin (Humboldt University), with 35,000 students
- Freie Universität Berlin (Free University of Berlin), with around 35,000 students
- Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), with 30,000 students.
The Universität der Künste has about 4,300 students.
