The Secretaría de Educación de Honduras (Department of Education of Honduras) in Honduras is the governmental institute that is responsible for education in Honduras and is the equivalent of Ministries of Education of other countries.

Responsibilities

The Ministry of Education does not participate in the regulation of university education. By constitutional mandate, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (UNAH) or the National Autonomous University of Honduras, "enjoys the exclusive right to organize, lead and develop the higher and vocational education. In the spirit of this mandate was issued the Law on Higher Education (Decree No.142-89 of the National Congress), which states that "The organization, management and development of higher education level is in charge of the National Autonomous University Honduras, by the following bodies:

  1. Claustro Pleno Universitario, University Faculty House
  2. Consejo de Educación Superior, Council for Higher Education
  3. Consejo Técnico Consultivo, Technical Advisory Council
  4. Dirección de Educación Superior, Directorate of Higher Education

In 1989, this policy was augmented by the higher education law establishing the [[Council of Higher Education (Honduras)| Council of Higher Education], the current administrator of public and private centers of higher education in Honduras apart from UNAH. This Council of Higher Education has put into motion plans to create the National System of Accreditation of Higher Education in Honduras (SINAESH), an autonomous organization that will be responsible for guaranteeing and certifying the quality of both public and private Honduran tertiary institutions.

UNAH manages the Dirección de Educación Superior (Spanish) or Directorate of Higher Education, which is the executive body of the resolutions of the Council for Higher Education. Acts as Secretary's level and its Director is the means of communication and link with higher education institutions. Its organization will be determined in the regulation of the Directorate.
