Fred Mulder is the Rector of Open Universiteit Nederland (OUNL) since September 2000. He has a chair as Professor in Informatics Education at OUNL since 1991, after having started to work at OUNL in its pioneering years in 1983. From 1993 till 1996 he was Dean of the School of Engineering. In 1998 he left OUNL for the Business School of Universiteit Twente (until Sept. 2000).

He holds degrees in Chemical Engineering (BSc), Applied Mathematics (MSc Engineering) and Theoretical Chemistry (PhD). In 1979-1980 he worked as a Postdoc in Theoretical Chemistry at University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario, Canada). In 1997-1998 he was for a five-month Sabbatical Leave at the College of Computing of Georgia Tech (Atlanta, Georgia, USA).
