The Université Nancy 2 (University of Nancy 2) is a university in the heart of Nancy, France, focussing on social sciences.

University of Nancy 2 has 1,217 personnel including 717 professors and research professors and 500 personnel consisting of engineers, administrative staff, technicians, service employees and library staff.

The University's overall budget in 2004 was almost €20 million (excluding State wages). Registration fees represent 10% of the establishment's resources.

The academic library of the University of Nancy 2, opened by French president Albert Lebrun, contains around 500,000 documents, among which at least 250,000 books, in 35 locations.

Nancy 2 University is an interdisciplinary university, oriented towards Human and Social Sciences in the following domains:

  • Law, Economics, Management
  • Human and Social Sciences
  • Civilisations, Humanities, Languages
  • Informatics, Cognitive Sciences and applications,

It offers its students:

  • 22 majors for a Bachelor's degree, with 15 options and 35 possible combinations of courses
  • 11 majors for a Professional BA/BSc degree
  • 25 majors for a Master's degree, with 86 options, for either professional or research programmes.

It also offers University Technology Diplomas in its IUT Departments in Nancy, Epinal and Verdun, together with University Degree) in all its campuses.

In 2004/2005, Nancy 2 University welcomed almost 19,000 students in its 8 Training and Research Units, 8 Institutes including 2 IUTs, 1 University Remote Teaching Centre, 3 University Professional Institutes and a private management school attached to the University by agreement. It issues 8,000 degrees and diplomas every year.

In addition to initial training, Nancy 2 offers a wide range of further training programmes, including open and distance learning facilities. It traditionally encourages purely professional training and the development of training in and through research.


Research

Research at Nancy 2 is based around 5 main priority areas:

  • New technologies, languages and communication
  • History, literature, civilisation
  • Cognition: scientific culture, health, education
  • Training: work, employment, skills
  • Regulations: space, organizations, environment, individuals and companies


Nancy 2 operates an active, articulated policy with construction of the 2005 / 2008 LMD Bachelor's("Licence")/Master's/Doctorate programme.

It currently has:

  • 20 teams including 5 Combined Research Units with the CNRS (French National Scientific Research organization),
  • 3 doctorate schools and 2 interdisciplinary training programmes.

Nancy 2's scientific activities are now underpinned by the Research Centre's "Frontiers" project (Future MSH - Maison des Sciences de l'Homme - Human Sciences Centre).

In the service of interdisciplinarity, the task of this organization, which will initially include the CNRS teams, will be to pool the services offered to research professors, research workers and doctorate students. Its objective is to simplify access, production and distribution of knowledge by hosting transverse projects.


On-line registration

Nancy 2 was the first French university to offer on-line registration (and re-registration) to all its students. This year it welcomes close to 19,000 students, of whom 12,000 registered via the Internet
