The ''University of the Arctic'' (UArctic) consortium is a cooperative network of universities, colleges, and other institutions in the Circumpolar North. Its mission is to create a strong, sustainable circumpolar region, by reducing barriers to higher education in the North. UArctic is not a degree-granting institution, but does offer courses to students in the region. Students must typically register at participating universities in order to take classes, either via the web or through face-to-face programmes. UArctic was launched in 2001.
