Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM) is a public university based primarily in Mexico City. In 2006, it had roughly 280,000 students enrolled (primarily pursuing undergraduate degrees).

Distance learning at UNAM is coordinated by the Coordinadora de Universidad Abierta y Educación a Distancia (CUAED). Its mission is to promote equity and quality in higher education. CUAED's PUEL System (Programa Universidad en Línea, or Online University Program) allows creation and delivery of online courses and materials across the university.

UNAM has campuses all across Mexico, plus four small extension campuses in the US and Canada (in San Antonio, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; and Gatineau, Quebec). The extension campuses focus largely on promoting knowledge of Spanish language and Mexican culture.
