Amazonas (Brazil) is one of the 27 federative units of Brazil. (There are states and departments called Amazonas in Venezuela and Peru also.)
It is located in the northwestern corner of Brazil. It is the largest Brazilian state by area and the 9th largest country subdivision in the world.
Neighbouring states are (from the north clockwise) Roraima, Pará, Mato Grosso, Rondônia, and Acre. It also borders Peru, Colombia and Venezuela.
Neighbours includes the Amazonas Department in Colombia, as well as the Amazonas State in Venezuela, and the Loreto Region in Peru.
Amazonas is named after the Amazon River. It is also home to the highest mountain in Brazil, Pico da Neblina, a tepui which stands at 2,994 metres (9,823 ft) above sea level.
Its capital and largest city is Manaus.
Its population is around 3.5 million.
