Lakehead University (LU) supports online and distance education through its Continuing Education and Distributed Learning (CEDL) offices.

Lakehead University's main office is in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. It is the only university in Northwestern Ontario. Lakehead offers a broad range of degree and diploma programs within nine faculties. Nearly all Lakehead students are from Ontario, Canada, though out-of-province and international students account for 5.7% and 2.3% of enrollments respectively.

Lakehead University evolved from Lakehead Technical Institute (founded 1946) and Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology (founded 1957).

The university has roughly 7,300 undergraduates; 750 postgraduates; and 290 full-time faculty members.
