Open Alpen-Adria University Klagenfurt
The Alpen-Adria University (AAU) Klagenfurt positions itself as an open institution in the increasingly
networked knowledge society. Being a regionally based, campus university, the aim of its
eLearning strategy is to bridge the Digital Divide both in production and in access. The strategy
consists of four strands:
∎ eLearning support net
∎ eLearning research net
∎ OpenCourseWare
∎ ePortfolios
Given its mission as a public higher education and research institution, the Alpen-Adria University Klagenfurt
emphasizes the characteristics of an open institution, aiming at openness for the exchange of learning materials
and scientifi c content, openness for the joint development of study programmes and the collaboration
with other institutions, openness for the needs of target groups and client organizations. The AAU wishes
to contribute to efforts for bridging the Digital Divide, both with respect to access and production. Digital
resources should be published and made accessible. Members of the AAU will be encouraged to actively use
information and communication technologies to produce new knowledge and resources and to design communication
structures.
∎ eLearning support net: A range of resources and services for eLearning are currently provided by different
support units, e.g. central IT department, library, staff development. These resources and services will be
bundled, coordinated and supplemented to create coherent support structures meeting the needs of the
AAU.
∎ elearning research net: Existing research activities in eLearning will be brought together, an interdisciplinary
network of researchers will be set up. Research activities will be documented, fi ndings will be
evaluated with respect to their application within AAU.
∎ OpenCourseWare: Following the example of MIT’s OpenCourseWare initiative, the AAU will support its
members in publishing their materials online for free. Doing this, the AAU aims at a wider distribution
of eLearning, but also at improving the quality of eLearning materials and at an increased visibility of its
academic staff.
∎ ePortfolios: Students will be supported in documenting their achievements and products, which they
collect during the course of their studies, in individual, electronic student portfolios. Electronic student
portfolios can be published online.
