Wales (Welsh: Cymru) is a country that is part of the [[United Kingdom]] and the island of Great Britain, bordered by [[England]] to its east, the Irish Sea to its north and west, and the Bristol Channel to its south. It had a population in 2011 of 3,063,456 and has a total area of 20,779 km2 (8,023 sq mi). Wales has over 1,680 miles (2,700 km) of coastline and is largely mountainous, with its highest peaks in the north and central areas, including Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), its highest summit. The country lies within the north temperate zone and has a changeable, maritime climate.

Higher Education in Wales is overseen by [[HEFCW]], the ''Higher Education Funding Council for Wales''.
 
Its mission is to:

On 12 October 2007 HEFCW released its consultation document [http://www.hefcw.ac.uk/LearningTeaching_Docs/W0742HE_circ.pdf Enhancing Learning and Teaching through Technology: a Strategy for Higher Education in Wales]. This describes 13 ''Indicators of Success'', seven short term and six long term, spread across five categories.
 
Higher Education in Wales is delivered via 11 distinct universities and higher education colleges in Wales, plus the Open University in Wales, as well as via a number of further education colleges that offer higher education courses.  Funding is provided for the following:

# University of Wales, Lampeter
# University of Wales, Newport
# NEWI - North East Wales Institute

The JISC Regional Support Centre in Wales  - [http://admin.rsc-wales.ac.uk RSC Wales] - is active in supporting e-learning including in the ACL area (called PCDL in England) - and more specifically, to:
* deliver e-learning support to Voluntary and Community Learning Providers
* increase the use of e-learning by developing skills and knowledge
* broker or provide training and expertise to the ACL sector
