Supplemental student may use the school to take courses online that are not offered in their local schools. Most take one course at a time; none are fully online students (i.e. all remain enrolled at their local, traditional schools). The WV Virtual School is not a diploma-granting institution; students are enrolled in, and graduated from, their local schools.

The local school must approve each distance learning course and facilitate registration of the course through the WVVS contact. Students may be required to take online courses on-site at their local school, depending on the school's decision.
