- The City of Angels Virtual Academy (born from the US Los Angeles Unified School District or LAUSD) was an "independent study school" founded in 1993; COAVA became full-time online academy in 2010
- Served 650 students in first year
- Designed for students with special interests and abilities, scheduling problems, or individual needs that cannot be accommodated in the traditional school setting
- Serves a student body drawn from a 700-square mile area
- Instructional sites house 2 to 5 teachers and are located in community centers, churches, LAUSD-owned properties, and commercial buildings
- Grades K-12
