The Universidad Galileo (University of Galileo) supports distance and e-learning.

The institution’s main office is in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The University of Galileo in Guatemala is a new university with a focus on information technology. Based in Guatemala, Galileo is a leader in Central America education in the study of technology planning and analysis; electrical engineering; and design, development, and application of educational technology solutions. Galileo awards undergraduate and masters degrees in technology. Galileo graduates are committed to using their strong technology background to address social development issues in both Guatemala and the broader international community.

With its focus on technology and learning, Galileo needed a leading web-based technology for its local and distance learners. Since 1998, Galileo has been developing distance learning programs and physical class e-learning support.

Universidad Galileo awards e-Learning Certification with modules such as "LMS management" and "e-Moderation of Videoconferencing". Its information about e-learning says the following: "A course in e-learning has a series of activities to enrich the learning process, such as forum discussions, chats, video conferencing, interactive exercises, homework, online tests and many other features, all designed holistically to reach the learning objectives of the course. Moreover, not all courses have the same set of activities in which students must participate.

There are also arrangements where videoconferencing is used to deliver master classes (such as those received in a classroom). This also fits the definition of e-learning and brings the most important advantage which is access to the course without any physical movement, while it does not change the quality or the methodology of teaching, content, etc."

Platform: As the .LRN web site shows in its case studies, Galileo University is using the .LRN platform: ".LRN has lived up to its promise to grow along with the institution. Today, GES has 16,000 registered users, and actively supports 524 courses, 100 professors, and nearly 3,000 students. GES delivers over 55,000 sessions a month; according to Rocael Hernandez, "GES handles thousands of transactions per day, with multiple concurrent users and a mountain of data." GES's customization is being ported back to .LRN application framework -- enhancing the software for the broader .LRN community."
