SOLO - "SOLO, or the Sudan Open Learning Organization, uses open and non-formal distance learning; the only NGO working on educating Sudanese refugees to do so. ... One of their recent initiatives, Bina Algiraea, is directed at post-literacy students. Many people in Sudan who learn to read and write do not use these skills in their day to day lives and their skills decline. The Bina Algiraea program has students write about topics in their community – from proverbs to health and sanitation – and then publishes and distributes these manuals." TESSA (http://www.tessafrica.net/) - TESSA, working with a range of teacher education institutions, has developed "a large bank of highly structured, activity based OER study units" for use in classrooms, as a response to the challenges of teacher training. "TESSA is Africa’s largest teacher education network. Since 2005 it has focused on the creation and use of Open Educational Resources (OERs) to improve the quality of, and extend access to, school based teacher education at scale." The Open University of Sudan reported 1,935 teaching supervisors (presumably in Sudan, though whether these are affiliated with the University is unclear) were aware of TESSA. "At the Open University of Sudan a selection of TESSA OER has been compiled into a handbook to support teachers in their third cycle teaching practice in the B. Ed (distance mode for in-service teachers). Study of the handbook is compulsory and teachers are expected to integrate strategies from the handbook into their lesson plans and try them out in the classroom."
