			:Samtse College of Education was called the Teacher Training Institute and was inaugurated... on 29th May 1968, i.e., 39 years back. It was upgraded to the National Institute of Education in 1984, and in 2006 it was renamed Samtse College of Education.

			:From a small training institute with 41 in-service and pre-service teachers with the primary teacher training course in the beginning, it has grown into a full-fledged college today with B. Ed, PGCE and Distance Education programmes. Within 39 years of evolution, it has achieved an all-round development to become a popular tertiary college in the kingdom.

			The Distance Teacher Education Programme (DTEP) at Samtse College of Education was established in December 1995 to "update and upgrade in-service primary school teachers." Distance education mode allowed teachers to study while working at the same time. Per an earlier incarnation of the web site (see the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, http://web.archive.org/web/20070223025621/www.dtepniesamtse.edu.bt/):

			:The DTEP aims to upgrade the academic and professional qualifications of teachers, and foster the habits of life-long learning in them by employing the use of information and communication technology to enhance flexibility and support in learning.

			:Samtse College of Education began as Teacher Training Institute (TTI) and pioneered teacher education in Bhutan when it was opened on 29 May 1968. TTI started with the training of primary school teachers and gradually grew into NIE (National Institute of Education) in 1985 when a degree level course for training secondary school teachers was introduced. In 1990, the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) was introduced, followed by a degree level course for primary school teaching in 1993. In 2005 it became an affiliate of the Royal University of Bhutan and was renamed as Samtse College of Education. Samtse College of Education continues to play an active role in Bhutan's education through numerous activities such as workshops, short courses, and school curriculum design and development work.
